Well, if the future of mental health care is everything about IMs, FaceTime and ‘OMG, which neuroses R U?’ quizzes, I decided I ‘d discover what that brave new world would resemble. I registered for 4 very different online mental health services– varying in expense from complimentary to , 100 a month– and ran my stress and anxieties through them all, at the same time, for a week. Here’s what I discovered.

What I’m doing here is evaluating my experience of utilizing each mental health service, rather than its effectiveness – since even the most wizard-like therapist isn’t going to ‘treat’ you in just one week. Okay, cool – let’s mental health!

How does it work?
As seen on FB (by me, anyway), US business is the corporate leviathan of the e-counselling game. They claim to have 500 certified counsellors working for them, each with at least 3 years of experience.
After filling out a questionnaire to determine what specific flavour of mental you are, you’re coupled with a counsellor, who you can mercilessly switch for a different one at any time. (I got Dr. Laura Dabney, from Virginia). You then kick off an instantaneous messaged treatment session that both you and your counsellor can drop in and out of, and which could, in theory, go on and on up until one of you ultimately passed away.
What does it cost?
You get a free seven-day trial – just like a totally free Netflix or Amazon Prime trial, other than with way more concerns about what your youth was like. After that, it costs from , 24.50 a week for unrestricted message-based counselling and one ‘free’ phone session with your counsellor each month. Yeah, I do not get how it’s complimentary either, but whatever.
How much is BetterHelp monthly?
Filtering that through instant messaging might be valuable if you find the concept of baring your soul to a stranger a bit awks. You won’t get the same connection as with in person counselling, but the semi-anonymity might make it simpler to open if you have actually been drinking two bottles of rum and dancing around in your dead nan’s bridal gown every night.
She initially ascertained the scale of my stress and anxiety, what triggers it– social scenarios, satisfying people for the very first time– and then dived headlong into my fractious youth (separated parents, stretched familial relationships, bullied in junior school). She was pretty nosey tbh, but then that’s her job, isn’t it?
In general, the service is impressively slick. The conversation can be a little stop-starty sometimes, but it was in fact a far smoother and more on-tap experience than I expected. I even got quick responses to messages over the weekend, which was unexpected.
Talkspace vs Betterhelp
The fact you can modify messages before sending them indicates you’re not likely to blurt out something revealing and unguarded in the heat of the moment. Profound minutes of realisation might be tough to come by if you can’t get an unwinded flow going.
Who do I think it might it be good for?
Anybody with a low-end mental health concern who’s cool with getting counselled in a really internet-y, 2016-y method. If you’re living under the blackest, bleakest cloud possible and need serious attention (and potentially some medications), most likely isn’t for you Talk Space Payment Due After Each Session
