I signed up for four very different online psychological health services– ranging in cost from free to , 100 a month– and ran my anxieties through them all, at the same time, for a week. Here’s what I discovered.
Does BetterHelp use licensed therapists? Is Talk Space Free
What I’m doing here is evaluating my experience of using each psychological health service, rather than its efficiency – since even the most wizard-like therapist isn’t going to ‘treat’ you in simply one week. I’m merely comparing each service to the experience of being in a space and blarting on about yourself to a therapist. If you’re with me, nod. Okay, cool – let’s mental health!

How does it work?
As seen on FB (by me, anyhow), United States business is the corporate behemoth of the e-counselling game. They claim to have 500 licensed counsellors working for them, each with at least 3 years of experience.
After filling out a questionnaire to establish what specific flavour of mental you are, you’re coupled with a counsellor, who you can mercilessly swap for a different one at any time. (I got Dr. Laura Dabney, from Virginia). You then begin an immediate messaged therapy session that both you and your counsellor can drop in and out of, and which could, in theory, continue until one of you eventually passed away.
What does it cost?
You get a complimentary seven-day trial – much like a free Netflix or Amazon Prime trial, except with way more questions about what your childhood resembled. After that, it costs from , 24.50 a week for limitless message-based counselling and one ‘free’ phone session with your counsellor monthly. Yeah, I don’t get how it’s totally free either, however whatever.
How much is BetterHelp monthly?
Filtering that through immediate messaging might be helpful if you find the idea of baring your soul to a stranger a bit awks. You won’t get the very same connection just like in person counselling, however the semi-anonymity might make it easier to open up if you have actually been drinking two bottles of rum and dancing around in your dead nan’s bridal gown every night.
She initially established the scale of my stress and anxiety, what triggers it– social circumstances, fulfilling people for the first time– and then dived headlong into my fractious childhood (divorced parents, stretched familial relationships, bullied in junior school). She was quite nosey tbh, but then that’s her task, isn’t it?
Overall, the service is impressively slick. The discussion can be a little stop-starty sometimes, but it was actually a far smoother and more on-tap experience than I anticipated. I even got fast reactions to messages over the weekend, which was unexpected.
Talkspace vs Betterhelp
The truth you can modify messages prior to sending them suggests you’re not likely to blurt out something vulnerable and revealing in the heat of the moment. So extensive moments of realisation might be hard to come by if you can’t get an unwinded flow going.
Who do I think it might it be good for?
Anybody with a low-end mental health concern who’s cool with getting counselled in a very internet-y, 2016-y way. If you’re living under the blackest, bleakest cloud you can possibly imagine and need serious attention (and perhaps some meds), most likely isn’t for you Is Talk Space Free
