Well, if the future of mental health care is everything about IMs, FaceTime and ‘OMG, which neuroses R U?’ tests, I chose I ‘d find out what that brave new world would be like. I signed up for four really different online psychological health services– varying in expense from free to , 100 a month– and ran my stress and anxieties through them all, at the same time, for a week. Here’s what I found.
Does BetterHelp use licensed therapists? Goto Talkspace
What I’m doing here is evaluating my experience of using each psychological health service, instead of its effectiveness – because even the most wizard-like therapist isn’t going to ‘treat’ you in just one week. I’m merely comparing each service to the experience of being in a room and blarting on about yourself to a therapist. If you’re with me, nod. Okay, cool – let’s psychological health!
How does it work?
As seen on FB (by me, anyhow), US business is the business behemoth of the e-counselling game. They declare to have 500 licensed counsellors working for them, each with a minimum of three years of experience.
After filling out a questionnaire to establish what specific flavour of psychological you are, you’re coupled with a counsellor, who you can mercilessly switch for a different one at any time. (I got Dr. Laura Dabney, from Virginia). You then begin an instant messaged therapy session that both you and your counsellor can drop in and out of, and which could, in theory, go on and on up until one of you eventually died.
What does it cost?
You get a free seven-day trial – much like a complimentary Netflix or Amazon Prime trial, except with way more questions about what your youth was like. After that, it costs from , 24.50 a week for limitless message-based counselling and one ‘complimentary’ phone session with your counsellor per month. Yeah, I do not get how it’s totally free either, but whatever.
How much is BetterHelp monthly?
Filtering that through instant messaging may be practical if you find the idea of baring your soul to a stranger a bit awks. You won’t get the same connection just like face-to-face counselling, however the semi-anonymity might make it simpler to open if you have actually been consuming two bottles of rum and dancing around in your dead nan’s bridal gown every night.
She first determined the scale of my anxiety, what activates it– social scenarios, fulfilling individuals for the very first time– and then dived headlong into my fractious childhood (separated moms and dads, stretched familial relationships, bullied in junior school). She was quite nosey tbh, but then that’s her job, isn’t it?
In general, the service is remarkably slick. The conversation can be a little stop-starty at times, but it was really a far smoother and more on-tap experience than I expected. I even got speedy reactions to messages over the weekend, which was unforeseen.
Talkspace vs Betterhelp
The fact you can modify messages prior to sending them implies you’re unlikely to blurt out something vulnerable and revealing in the heat of the moment. Profound minutes of realisation may be tough to come by if you can’t get a relaxed flow going.
Who do I believe it might it benefit?
Anybody with a low-end psychological health issue who’s cool with getting counselled in a really internet-y, 2016-y way. If you’re living under the blackest, bleakest cloud possible and require major attention (and possibly some medications), probably isn’t for you Goto Talkspace
